ROUNDTABLE: Geographical indications between competitiveness and sustainability: challenges and opportunities
Flavio Innocenzi has dedicated his career to advocating for and promoting high-quality agri-food and wine products, seamlessly connecting local excellence with global opportunities. He regards Geographical Indications as strategic catalysts for sustainable development in rural communities and as conduits for fostering bilateral trade and peace, all while respecting cultural nuances.
Throughout his career, Flavio has occupied managerial positions in leading companies within the food industry. He started as an Export Area Manager at a prominent European meat industry, A.I.A. Spa, and later became General Manager of a confectionery industry. His twelve years at Veronafiere, culminating in the role of Commercial Director, involved organizing Vinitaly, launching the "Wine to Asia" exhibition in Shenzhen, and managing other international agro-food exhibitions, further establishing his expertise in promoting top-quality products worldwide. Since 2010, as Director of the Asiago PDO Cheese Consortium, he has updated the Book of Specifications, thereby strengthening its market position and enhancing its international protection under bilateral and multilateral agreements.
In 2022 and 2023, Flavio served as Director of the Delle Venezie PDO Wines Consortium, the most extensive Italian wine designation, where he championed Venetian vineyards on the international stage. His recent appointments to the Steering Committee for the Master in Innovation & Marketing at Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia reflect his ongoing commitment to innovation in the agri-food sector.
Flavio has also collaborated with WIPO on several occasions, facilitating training sessions aimed at developing national systems of Geographical Indications, especially in Central and South-East Asian countries.
Since 2020, Flavio’s advocacy has extended to his role as a Member of the Board of Producers at AREPO Quality in Brussels, and from 2024, as a Member of the Executive Board of Origin EU in Brussels, representing Italian Geographical Indications – a cultural and economic heritage that accounts for a production turnover of €20.4 billion.
